Cruising is a fantastic way to see the world, but onboard expenses can quickly add up. Here are five practical tips to help you enjoy all the amenities and experiences cruising has to offer without breaking the bank.
Smart Sipping and Dining
Saving money on a cruise can start with being smart about your drinks and meals.
Did you know many cruise lines let you bring a limited amount of non-alcoholic drinks and wine onboard? Check the policy before you go and take advantage of it.
Drink packages can be a great deal if you plan to drink a lot of the beverages they cover, like soda, specialty coffee, or alcohol. However, if you only want a cocktail or two a day, it’s usually cheaper to buy them separately. To decide if a drink package is worth it, divide the daily cost of the package by the average price of a drink onboard. This will tell you how many drinks you need to break even, helping you decide if the package is right for you.
When it comes to food, the main dining room and buffet are included in your fare and offer plenty of delicious options. Specialty restaurants can be tempting but tend to be more expensive, so maybe save those for a special occasion.
Internet Savvy
Staying connected while on a cruise can be pricey, but there are ways to save.
Purchasing a Wi-Fi package in advance is usually cheaper than paying as you go. If you can manage it, consider a digital detox and skip the internet altogether for some real relaxation. Free Wi-Fi is often available at ports, so plan your internet usage around those stops.
Excursions and Onboard Fun
Planning your own excursions can save a ton of money compared to booking through the cruise line. Do a little research on your ports of call and map out your adventures. This is something we’re happy to help you with if you’d like!
Be aware: ONLY excursions booked through the ship will be waited on if running late. All aboard time is all aboard time, so give yourself a couple of hours of wiggle-room to return to the ship if booking on your own.
Onboard, there are plenty of free activities like shows, trivia games, and poolside events to keep you entertained without spending extra.
Shopping and Souvenirs
Set a budget for souvenirs and stick to it. Be careful with onboard shopping—duty-free doesn’t always mean a great deal.
A lot of cruise lines will offer good deals on t-shirts and other small souvenirs at specific times, so keep your eyes open for that.
Consider buying unique items from local vendors at ports for more affordable and authentic keepsakes. This not only saves money but also supports local businesses, making your souvenir even more special.
Staying Healthy and Fit
Most over-the-counter medications are available for purchase on board cruise ships… at a very high premium. Avoid unexpected medical expenses by packing a small first-aid kit with essentials like pain relievers, seasickness medication, and bandages.
Take advantage of the free fitness classes offered on the ship and use the onboard gym facilities, which are usually included in your fare. Skip the paid classes or spa services if you’re looking to save but still want to stay active and healthy.
By following these tips and being mindful of your spending, you can enjoy an incredible cruise without worrying about overspending.
