When planning a vacation, many people only think about the big things such as airfare, hotel and maybe a tour or two. But it’s often the little things we forget to budget for that end up catching us by surprise. Over the years, I’ve sometimes been surprised by these costs. As a result, I always try to give my clients a heads-up so they don’t end their vacation with sticker shock.
Here are a few of the most common “gotcha” expenses I see people overlook:
Airline fees
That low airfare isn’t always the final price. Luggage fees, seat assignments and overweight bags can add up fast. This can be especially true if you’re flying with more than one suitcase.
Resort or hotel fees
You book a room for one price, but when you check out, there’s an extra daily “resort fee” for Wi-Fi or amenities you may not have even used. Those small charges multiply quickly. Always ask about fees before booking.
Getting around once you arrive
Airport transfers, taxis, rideshares and even airport parking can quickly eat into your budget. Renting a car? Don’t forget about gas, tolls and parking charges that aren’t always included in the quoted rate.
Food and drinks outside the plan
Even at an all-inclusive, not everything is necessarily included. Specialty restaurants, premium drinks, or grabbing a snack while out sightseeing can easily throw off your budget.

Tips and gratuities
From porters and guides, to cruise ship staff, tips are expected in many places. Sometimes they’re automatically added, other times they’re cash only. It’s always good to plan ahead.
Money matters
Traveling outside the U.S.? Foreign transaction fees on credit cards or ATM withdrawal charges are easy to forget until they show up on your statement. Even a small fee adds up over a week or two abroad.
Travel insurance
It’s not the most exciting expense, which is why people often skip it. But when you need it, you’ll be glad you had it. Medical emergencies, lost luggage, or last-minute travel changes can get very expensive.
Souvenirs and little extras
Most of us underestimate this one. Whether it’s shopping, excursions, or that one-of-a-kind experience you didn’t plan on, these often end up being the things you talk about the most afterward. so it’s smart to budget for them.
Bottom line? None of these things have to be surprises. With a little planning, they can be worked into your budget so you have a much better idea of what to expect. That’s one of the reasons I love helping people plan trips. It’s not just about booking the flight and hotel, it’s about making sure the whole experience is smooth from start to finish.
