Visiting A New City? 10 Tips To Get The Most From Your 1st Visit

Jul 7th 2025

Visiting a new city for the first time is always exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. To make the most of your experience, it’s important to avoid some common mistakes many first-time visitors make.

Here’s a guide to help you steer clear of these pitfalls and enjoy your trip...

1. Research the Destination in Advance

One of the biggest mistakes we often make is arriving in a city without any prior research. It really is helpful to familiarize yourself with the city’s layout, key attractions, local customs and your transportation options. This will help you navigate the city more efficiently and avoid unnecessary stress.

2. Keep Your Itinerary Manageable

While it’s tempting to try and see everything in a new city, cramming too many activities into one day can lead to exhaustion. Trust me on this one! Instead of rushing from one place to another, prioritize a few must-see attractions and leave room for spontaneous exploration. This will allow you to truly soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the city without being wiped out.

3. Don't Rely Solely on Tourist Guides

Tourist guides are great for getting an overview of a city, but relying solely on them can limit your experience. Don’t be afraid to step off the beaten path and discover hidden gems that aren’t listed in guidebooks. Ask locals for recommendations, explore different neighborhoods and try local restaurants that aren’t swarmed with tourists.

4. Don't Ignore Local Etiquette

Every city has its own set of social norms and cultural practices. Ignoring these can lead to awkward situations or even offend the locals. Take the time to learn basic etiquette, such as greeting customs, dining manners and tipping practices to ensure a respectful/pleasant interaction with the people you meet.

5. Learn a Few Basic Phrases in the Local Language

Even if the city you’re visiting is known for being English-friendly, learning a few basic phrases in the local language can go a long way. Simple words like “hello,” “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me” show respect and appreciation for the local culture. Plus, it can help you in situations where English isn’t widely spoken.

6. Don't Underestimate Transportation Time

Another common mistake is underestimating how long it takes to get from one place to another. Traffic, public transportation delays and the sheer size of some cities can wreck your "perfect" schedule. Be sure to allow extra time for getting around, especially if you have reservations or timed tickets.

7. Book Your Accommodations in a Convenient Location

Choosing the wrong location for your accommodation can significantly impact your trip. It’s important to consider proximity to public transportation, major attractions, as well as safe neighborhoods. A cheaper hotel in a far-off location might cost you more in time and transportation expenses in the long run.

8. Take Appropriate Safety Precautions

In the excitement of exploring a new city, it’s easy to let your guard down. However, it’s crucial to stay aware of your surroundings and take basic safety precautions. Avoid displaying valuables, keep your belongings secure and be cautious when using ATMs. Researching safe and unsafe areas of the city beforehand can also help you stay out of trouble. Basically the same precautions you take when visiting any major city in the U.S.

9. Eat Local

Many travelers stick to familiar foods, especially in a foreign city. However, food is a huge part of a city’s culture and skipping local cuisine means missing out on an essential aspect of your travel experience. Be adventurous and try local dishes, street food (use common sense) and traditional drinks—you might discover a new favorite!

10. Always Have a Backup Plan

Here's a shocker... Things don’t always go as planned when traveling, so it’s wise to have a backup plan. This includes having copies of important documents, knowing the location of your country’s embassy or consulate and having a plan in case you lose your passport, wallet or phone. Flexibility and preparation can turn a potential crisis into just a minor hiccup.

Conclusion

Exploring a new city for the first time is an exciting adventure, but having a well thought out plan can help you make the most of your trip. By being prepared, flexible and respectful of the local culture, you’ll be able to enjoy your visit to the fullest and create lifetime memories.
