Booking a cruise can feel simple at first. Pick a ship, pick a date, pick a room, done.
Except… not really.
Cruises have a lot of little details that can make a big difference in how much you enjoy your trip. I can help you avoid the “I wish I would’ve known that before I booked” moments, but only if I know what actually matters to you.
Before you book your cruise, here are a few things I would need to know.
1. Who is going on the trip
This sounds obvious, but it matters more than people think.
Are you traveling as a couple? With kids? With grandparents? With another family? Is this a girls’ trip, honeymoon, anniversary, family vacation, or multigenerational trip?
Different cruise lines, ships, cabins, and itineraries work better for different groups. A ship that is perfect for a couple may not be the best fit for a family with toddlers. A great spring break cruise may not be what you want for a quiet anniversary trip.
The more I understand the people going, the better I can help narrow down the options.
2. Your real budget
Not your “I saw a cruise for $399” budget. Your real all-in comfort zone.
Cruise pricing can include more than just the fare. You may also need to think about taxes, port fees, gratuities, drinks, specialty dining, excursions, Wi-Fi, travel insurance, flights, hotels, parking, and transportation to/from the port.
That does not mean you have to spend a fortune. It just means I need to know what number actually feels comfortable so I can help you avoid surprises.
A good budget conversation saves everyone from vacation math trauma later. And nobody needs math trauma on vacation.
3. What kind of vacation you actually want
Do you want to relax by the pool and do absolutely nothing? Do you want a ship packed with activities? Do you want great food? Nightlife? Shows? Quiet spaces? Water slides? Kids’ clubs? Beaches? History? Adventure?
Not every cruise is the same.
Some people want the ship to be the destination. Others care more about the ports. Some want a party atmosphere. Some want calm. Some want luxury. Some want the cheapest way to get everyone on a boat and call it a win.
Don't be afraid to tell me what kind of trip you are hoping for, not just where you think you want to go.
4. Your travel style
This is where the little details matter.
Do you like having everything planned ahead of time, or do you prefer flexibility? Are you early risers or sleep-in-and-miss-breakfast people? Do you get motion sick easily? Do you care about being close to the elevator? Do you hate crowds? Do you like dressing up for dinner, or would that make you want to jump overboard?
Your travel style can affect the ship, itinerary, cabin location, dining time, excursion choices, and even the cruise line itself.
The more honest you are, the better the recommendations will be.
5. Any must-haves or deal breakers
Everyone has them.
Maybe you need connecting rooms. Maybe you want a balcony. Maybe you refuse to fly. Maybe your kids need a good pool area. Maybe you want a newer ship. Maybe you do not want a tender port. Maybe you need accessible accommodations. Maybe you absolutely do not want to cruise during hurricane season.
Whatever they may be, tell be early.
It is much easier to build the right trip around your must-haves than to fix a bad fit after it's already booked.
6. Your past travel experiences
Tell me what you've loved, as well as what you have hated on past vacations.
Loved an all-inclusive because everything felt easy? Say that. Hated a packed theme park trip because it felt exhausting? Say that too. Loved a previous cruise line? Great. Tried one and did not enjoy it? It's helpful.
Your past trips give clues about what will make this next trip feel like a win.
7. Anything you are nervous about
First cruise? Worried about motion sickness? Not sure how dining works? Confused by drink packages? Concerned about traveling with kids? Overwhelmed by ports? Nervous about hidden costs?
Bring it up.
I'm not just there to book the trip. I will help you understand what to expect so you feel prepared instead of overwhelmed.
Final Thoughts
You do not have to know exactly what cruise you want before talking to me. That is a big part of why I like to have a personal Zoom/phone call before starting the process of booking your cruise.
But the more I know about you and your family, your budget, your travel style, and your hopes for the trip, the better I can help you find the right fit.
Because the goal is not just to book a cruise. The goal is to book the right cruise for you.
