Cruising is often associated with indulgent buffets and lazy days at sea, but maintaining your fitness and health goals while enjoying all the luxury on board is totally doable!

Here are some practical tips to help strike a balance between relaxation and staying active on your next cruise.

Make Use of the Ship’s Fitness Facilities

Most cruise ships are equipped with state-of-the-art gyms and fitness centers.

Take advantage of these facilities by setting a workout routine that fits your schedule. If you’re a naturally early riser like me, hitting the gym before breakfast is a great way to start the day. More of a night owl? Get a workout in before dinner to be energized for the rest of your evening.

From cardio machines to free weights, cruise ship gyms offer a variety of equipment to help you stay in shape. An added bonus? Most of them have gorgeous panoramic ocean views!

Many ships also offer group fitness classes such as yoga, Pilates, and spinning, which can be a fun way to stay active and meet new people. Some come at an additional cost, but many are included. Check your daily planner for details.

Explore the Outdoor Spaces

Cruise ships typically have tracks or jogging paths on their decks. Running or walking while enjoying the sea breeze is not only invigorating but also a great way to stay fit.

Also, take advantage of any organized sports or recreational activities on board, such as basketball, pickleball or volleyball. There are also usually morning water aerobics classes in the pool, or next to the pool. Don’t knock them til you try them– they’re a serious low-impact workout!

Choose Healthy Dining Options

While it’s tempting to overindulge in some of the delectable cruise offerings– I mean the desserts are so tiny and cute!— many cruise lines offer healthier dining options that are just as delicious.

Look for menus that include fresh salads, lean proteins, and whole grains. Most ships also provide lighter fare on their buffet lines. Remember to watch portion sizes and avoid overeating at the buffet. Some ships even offer cooking classes that focus on healthy eating, giving you new ideas to take back and try at home.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health, especially when traveling. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Carry a refillable water bottle to ensure you’re always prepared.

Here’s a little tip: instead of directly putting your bottle under the water dispenser (which can be a germ magnet), use a provided cup to fill your bottle. It’s a small step that can make a big difference.

Plan Active Shore Excursions

One of the highlights of cruising is exploring new destinations. Opt for shore excursions that keep you active, like hiking, biking, or snorkeling. Many cruise lines offer adventure tours that can provide a great workout while letting you experience the local scenery.

Exploring ports on foot through a guided tour or on your own is another excellent way to stay active and see more of your destinations.

Make Time for Relaxation

While staying active is important, so is taking time to relax and unwind. Stress can negatively impact your health, so don’t forget to make time for activities that help you de-stress.

Whether it’s a soothing spa treatment or just lounging on deck with a good book, balancing activity with relaxation will help you come back from a cruise feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Set Realistic Goals

Finally, set achievable fitness goals for your cruise. Instead of aiming to maintain your exact workout routine from home, focus on staying active and making healthier choices while on board. Remember, cruising is about enjoying yourself, so finding a balance between fitness and fun is key.

By incorporating these tips, you can enjoy all the delights of cruising while keeping your fitness and health on track.
