Some people avoid cruising with their kids, thinking it will be too much work or not as enjoyable with little ones in tow. But at Hill Family Travel, we believe that cruising with the whole family can be a blast—you just need to know how to do it!
Luckily, we’ve done it plenty of times and have gathered some great tips and tricks to help you and your entire family sail the ocean blue together.
Choose the Right Cruise Line
Choosing the right cruise line is crucial to fully enjoying your vacation with kids. Not all cruise lines are created equal, and picking one that caters to families can make all the difference.
Of course, there are the heavy hitters like Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean, both of which are excellent choices. However, don’t overlook other cruise lines that also offer fantastic family experiences.
For example, we took our entire family on a Norwegian Cruise Line trip, and it was a hit! The kids' space was incredible, with activities running all day long. The staff clearly loved what they did, and there were plenty of fun activities we could enjoy together as a family.
Many cruise lines are expanding into the family market, so while it may seem intimidating to choose, that’s where we come in to help!
Pack Smarter, Not Harder
You don’t need to pack everything but the kitchen sink to be prepared for a cruise with kids. Let’s be real—cruise cabins aren’t exactly known for their spaciousness! There’s no need to clutter them with unnecessary items you won’t actually use.
Instead, focus on packing smart. We’ve put together an entire post dedicated to packing for a cruise with kids, full of detailed tips that will help make your vacation stress-free and enjoyable!
Get the Most Out of the Kids' Clubs
Every cruise line’s kids' space is a little different, but each one is definitely worth checking out! Not only does it give you, as parents, some kid-free time, but it also provides your children with the chance to make new friends and interact with staff members from around the world who are dedicated to ensuring they have a blast.
If you plan to drop your kids off at all, be sure to register them on the first day onboard. The specifics will vary from ship to ship, but the first day is the best time to get the lay of the land, learn about safety protocols, and discover all the fun activities they have to offer.
The daily planners typically have a place to see what is happening the following day, so spend a few minutes before bed highlighting some of the fun they don’t want to miss the next day!
Stay in a Routine… But Be Flexible
We’re not suggesting you need a strict, minute-by-minute schedule on your cruise, but maintaining some routine can be beneficial for kids. While it’s important to be flexible, sticking to a basic routine can help keep everyone happy.
If your kids still take naps, don’t skip them just because you’re having a great time. Overstressed, overtired kids can make things less enjoyable for everyone. Instead, take breaks to ensure your kids get the rest they need so the second half of the day goes more smoothly.
Remember, most kids’ routines don’t include a formal, three-course dinner at a fancy restaurant. If everyone’s feeling exhausted, don’t hesitate to skip the Main Dining Room and opt for something from the buffet or a quick meal. Maybe even squeeze in a nighttime swim before bed!
Ultimately, the goal is for your family to enjoy the cruise, so do what works best for you—even if it doesn’t align with the “typical” cruise experience.
Prepare for DownTime
Cruises include downtime, especially on the first day. But it’s no big deal if you’re prepared! Bring along some books, games, or other activities to keep your kids entertained and having fun.
We took our oldest on a cruise alone for his 10th birthday and dedicated half a suitcase to board and card games. Those are some of our favorite memories! We’d grab a soft-serve ice cream cone and sit in the buffet area, right next to the ocean, enjoying a few rounds of Settlers of Catan every afternoon.
Downtime doesn’t have to be boring. With the right preparation, it’s a chance to create even more special memories!
Get Cruising!
Cruising with kids doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With the right cruise line, smart packing, and a flexible approach to routines, your family can have an incredible time together at sea.
Embrace the kids' spaces, make the most of downtime, and remember that the key to a successful family cruise is preparation and flexibility. By following these tips, you’ll be set for a memorable adventure that everyone will enjoy.
